Thrive in the colon

All Symprove bacteria enter the colon in a live state and are present in the colon. They remain metabolically active in the colon, as demonstrated through the production of lactic acid.2Moens F, et al. 70% of freeze-dried competitor products lose more bacteria than Symprove

In the same study, five of Symprove’s seven freeze-dried competitor supplements lost over 70% of their bacteria in transit to the stomach as they attempted to recover to an active state.

Of those seven competitors, the total bacterial content of two dairy-based supplements also arrived at the stomach, whereas the remaining five freeze-dried supplements lost over 70% of the bacteria in transit to the stomach as they attempted to recover to an active state.

Symprove tested against seven competitors in-vitro

The ability of Symprove and seven of its competitors to survive the acidic conditions within an empty stomach (which we recommend is how Symprove should be taken) has been tested in-vitro.

The study found that a relatively high proportion of the bacteria in Symprove survived the acid shock during the first five minutes of exposure, whereas none of the bacteria in some of the competitor products survived.

Symprove survives oral delivery

A more recent experiment using a novel validated in-vitro model of the complete human gastrointestinal tract (M-SHIME®) confirmed that the bacteria in Symprove survive the challenges of oral delivery.

The number of viable bacteria in Symprove remained at their initial levels, even after exposure to stomach acid for 45 minutes, as well as bile salts and pancreatic fluid for 3 hours.

Having survived the journey through the upper gastrointestinal tract, further results from M-SHIME® prove that the four live and active bacteria strains in Symprove successfully establish themselves (or colonise) in the colon.

Three of the four bacteria were shown to colonise in both the lumen and the surrounding mucosal layer of the colon.

Successful delivery and colonisation of the four bacteria strains in Symprove along the colon results in multiple effects that help to drive the balance of the gut microbiome, as demonstrated with the M-SHIME® model.

An increase in lactic acid proves Symprove bacteria remains metabolically active in the colon

These effects include an increased production of lactic acid, which is the main end-product of the bacteria and proves they remain metabolically active in the colon, and an increased production of short-chain fatty acids such as butyrate, acetate and propionate, which are the major end products of fermentation.

Symprove bacteria encourages a healthy microbiome

In parallel, the thriving bacteria in Symprove reduced levels of ammonium and branched-chain fatty acids, both of which generally impair colon health. Inflammatory chemokines and antibiotic-induced E. coli were also reduced. All of these effects have the potential to encourage the microbiome to reach a healthier state.

The 4 Symprove water-borne bacteria
The four live bacteria strains in Symprove are:
  • Lactobacillus rhamnosus NCIMB 30174
  • Enterococcus faecium NCIMB 30176
  • Lactobacillus acidophilus NCIMB 30175
  • Lactobacillus plantarum NCIMB 30173

Symprove delivers 10 billion colony forming units of bacteria per 70 ml of product, consistent with the amount used in human clinical research trials.

These bacteria are commonly found in human and animal microbiomes.3Goldstein E, et al. The strain used in Symprove is fully characterised and has been subject to whole genome sequencing using recognised methodology, by NCIMB, to confirm identity and provide safety data, unlike other strains with evidence of pathogenicity.4Symprove quality and safety dossier 2017.
